Raised panel wainscoting – Wainscoting is a simple way to add a touch of elegance and class to any room. Wainscoting was originally created as a moisture protection for the lower part of a wall, but it is now used primarily for decorative purposes. There are several different types of wainscoting, and each style can be used to generate its own power within a room

According to the New England Classic, the most traditional style wainscoting raised panel. Raised panel wainscoting is typically used in formal areas such as living rooms, dining rooms, libraries or studies. With this type of wainscoting edges are inclined in order to create a raised panel. The standard height of this style is between 30 to 40 inches, but the air-higher limits can be accommodated by providing two series of panels by a center rail. The typical pieces necessary for raised panel wainscoting is rails, stiles and panels. The baseboard can be done by means of the bottom rail, or it may be built up by means of the other various parts of the casting.

A more extensive form of wainscoting is overlay style. This type of wainscoting is usually found in very formal areas of large homes, including dining rooms, living rooms, libraries or studies. This form of wainscoting is similar in shape to the raised panel wainscoting design, but it allows for a more complex effect within the panels themselves. An overlay piece of wood is placed on the flat panels between the rails and stiles, which creates a sunken look around the overlay. This style is finished off with a chair rail above the top panel.
